TIP ON ENGINE BAFFLING MATERIAL I have been working on my KR-2 since 1980, first with a partner and then I bought him out when his interest waned and now I am a the stage where I am beginning to wonder whether I am using this as a retirement project or whether I am going to fly it. I AM GOING TO FLY IT!! Part of the problem is trying to incorporate all the good ideas I have gotten from your News letter. I just have to learn to restrict what goes in and get the project finished. I am very impressed with an inexpensive baffling material as described in the Great Lakes publication, "Engine Baffli ng Manual for VW's". I laid a strip of wax paper on the bench, cut a yard of 6oz. cloth into 3 strips and proceeded to lay up a sandwich of cloth with GE Silicone caulking which, incidentally, comes in a variety of colors. You just squeegee the silicone in to the cloth, put the next layer on and squeegee and then the last layer with more silicone. I put another layer of wax paper over the sandwich and turned the whole thing over and removed the first wax paper and made sure that the bottom of the first layer had been covered. This makes plenty of baffling with scraps left over for gasket material for other uses; it's easy to cut, flexible and, according to the tube, guaranteed for 30 years! There was enough material left in the caulking tube to experiment a round with making some rubber grommets through which to pass control cables and wiring through the firewall. A block of candle wax or canning wax or, as I used, a stub of a large decorative candles works nicely for a mould. I ended up making two half-moulds. I used a 7/8 spade bit for the flange and a 5/8 spade bit for the body and then filled the pilot hole with wax scraps . When filled with rubber and struck off level, it will take about three days to cure in the mould. After removing the two halves, a little rubber smeared on the end and held with a little pressure will complete a very satisfactory grommet. I used a cork borer and a leather punch to cut the central holes. These are nothing more than a sharpened tube of the size you need. Bob Offord 5110 Harmony Lane 91941 La Mes a , CA 6 1 9-465-6083
